Rollover Crash North of Roswell New Mexico Takes One Life

Chaves County — On Friday, September 27, 2013, at approximately 7:37 AM; New Mexico State Police responded to the scene of a single vehicle rollover crash on US 285 near mile post 164, fifty miles north of Roswell, NM.

Initial investigation by New Mexico State Police determined that a 2005 Volvo passenger car was traveling northbound on US 285. The vehicle was driven by Lorraine Chavez, age 22, of Carlsbad, NM.

Evidence located at the scene indicates Ms. Chavez was traveling northbound on US 285, drifted onto the center median, over corrected causing the vehicle to roll four to six times before coming to rest.

Due to her injuries, Ms. Chavez passed away on scene. Ms. Chavez’ thirty-three year old male passenger, Levi Hughes of Fort Collins CO, sustained minor injuries.


Ms. Chavez was not utilizing her seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. Alcohol is not considered a factor in this crash.
